Checking Criminal History in Carrollton

Start with Carrollton Police when the requested record is an incident report, accident report, arrest narrative, photograph, audio file, video, or supplement created by a city officer. Use Carrollton Municipal Court for a city citation or municipal disposition. If the event led to county custody or a filed county prosecution, move next to the Carroll County sheriff or clerk. Each office answers a different question.

An initial report, supplemental narrative, body-camera video, photographs, and a certified court disposition are separate products. Naming each desired item also helps the city determine whether a different custodian holds part of the material.

Note: Carrollton’s county-seat role does not turn city police reports into county records.

Carrollton Police Department Records

Carrollton Police holds records created by its officers. The city form asks for requester contact information, a useful description and date range, inspection or copy preference, and a signature. Email the completed form to hbeaver@carrollton-ga.gov. The form says not to send payment until the request has been completed and the cost is known.

Describe the Carrollton event with the report number if known, the event date or narrow range, approximate time and location, and the exact components requested. If the number is unknown, those facts can still help records staff locate the file. A request should not assume that a basic incident copy includes dispatch audio, CAD logs, photographs, supplements, or video. Ask for each item by name.

UWG Police or Carrollton Police?

The University of West Georgia Police Department is a separate record custodian at 1601 Maple Street. An event on campus may produce a UWG Police record rather than a Carrollton Police report. The city form should not be used merely because the location has a Carrollton mailing address.

Identify the responder from an incident number, citation, officer information, or other source. Then submit the request to the agency that created the report. A later Carroll County jail booking does not transfer ownership of the source narrative. The same office-of-origin rule applies when another agency, such as the sheriff or Georgia State Patrol, handled the event.

Public Access Rules in Carrollton

The Georgia Open Records Act applies to Carrollton agency records unless an exemption permits withholding.
